Ebola

The news’s coverage on the Ebola outbreak was focused mainly on the United States where ten people contracted the virus and two of them died. The people that contracted the virus were doctors and nurses that either helped the infected from Africa or the three that doctors that got it from their work with Doctors Without Borders. Three of them were not medical professionals an aid worker, missionary, and NBC cameraman. This was very scary for most of the United States, they worried about an outbreak but the media really should have been focusing on where the outbreak was the worst, Africa.

Africa has limited resources when it comes to fighting diseases like Ebola. Just in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, there are only fifteen medical treatment centers that specialize in Ebola. There are over thirty new facilities planned to be constructed but their medical staff also limits them, which is why doctors from around the world are volunteering to go to Africa to help. Since the outbreak in March, over seventeen hundred people have contracted Ebola and over six thousand have died in Africa. That is a big number compared to the United States two.

One of the main concerns with the United States is that sending help with put the United States in danger of an outbreak. Out of the seven hundred doctors sent over there from Doctors Without Borders, only three have contracted the virus. This is because African doctors and doctors all of the world know how to contain the virus and how to protect themselves. They know that they have to clean everything to prevent the spread and wear protective suits that keep them safe. This is the worst year of the outbreak with over thirteen thousand cases and close to five thousand deaths, before that the worst year was in 1976, when there were a little over six hundred cases and four hundred and thirty one deaths. The death rate has actually gone down with every outbreak because Africa knows how to handle it better now.

This is why all of the Ebola fighters were named Time’s person of the year. These people are out there helping these people, well knowing the dangers of their exposure to the virus. Some of the doctors are even survivors that want to help these people get better. It is the people on the front lines of this virus that are making a big different of the mortality rates of this virus.
