The Killer Angels


The novel, The Killer Angels, was written by Michael Shaara that gives a historical account of the War of Gettysburg during the Civil War.  The novel focuses on the battle at Gettysburg that lasted about four days in 1863.  The novel gives an account of the Gettysburg battle based on the accounts from both Union troops and Confederate troops.  The Killer Angels is a novel that centers on the Battle of Gettysburg, during the Civil War, in 1863.  The plot of the story concerns the Battle of Gettysburg on the following dates July 1 to July 3, 1863.


Mr. Shaara really has done his research in writing the novel, The Killer Angels, because it gives realistic accounts of what occurred at the Battle of Gettysburg.  The novel’s characters are so realistic because they provide accounts of what was happening at the Battle of Gettysburg and how this battle turned the ties for the outcome of the Civil War.  The main character, J.L. Chamberlain, in one pertinent part of the novel has a memory of reciting to his father a speech from the Shakespeare play “Hamlet”, and how proud his father was of him.  The novel allows the reader to imagine what it was like being at the Battle of Gettysburg based on the first-hand knowledge from the main characters in the story.  The novel gives a play by play account of what happened during the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1 to July 3, 1863.  The novel even mentions major players in the Civil War like General Robert E. Lee and President Lincoln.  The novel gives a good account of the Battle of Gettysburg from the viewpoint of the main characters in the story.  The Killer Angels novel not only discuss the Civil War from the soldier’s’ viewpoint, but also from the perspectives of their families.


The novel, The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara is an excellent novel for anyone of any age to read because it gives a good story line with the Battle of Gettysburg as the plot background.  The main characters of the novel are very believable and has great historical significance.  The historical significance of the novel is that it gives a good account of what occurred at the Gettysburg battleground from July 1 to July 3, 1863.  The novel even discusses how the Civil War not only affects the soldiers, but their families as well.  The Killer Angels novel is a good read for any reader of any age and it won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 in fiction.
