Social Stratification In The Media:

The meaning of social stratification is all about a system. This system is what society uses in order to rank people of different categories. An example of this is how insanely clear it is between the classes of people that are within the United States. For those who are on top obviously, have more power, are wealthier and have a better status all around than those who are in the middle class or the lower class of people. This system is heavily tied into the media industry and how the media is an obvious influence on everyone.

The categories that social stratification tends to weigh in on include a person’s social group, where a person can or cannot live, and more. The obvious classes in society are the upper class, the middle class and then the lower class. There are all kinds of people in each class and each class can get broken down into other classes and other categories as well. For example, there is upper middle class, lower middle class, upper lower class, lower upper class, the highest of the high in the upper class and the lowest of the low in the lower class. Social stratification has always been there, even without media, the media just influences it heavier than ever. Back in the day there were classes and differences; think of the slaves and the slave owners or the ones who were considered to be noble and those who were considered to be peasants. Other people judging other people have been something that has always happened, but that does not give justice to this action. People should not be judged and they should not feel pressure to change who they are to do, act and say certain things just because of who they are, where they live, what they do for a living or any other aspect.

The media takes social stratification to a whole new level and makes people feel bad about who they are or how they look and it makes them do certain things, act a certain way, dress a certain way and more just to try to fit in and be able to feel accepted; But getting ‘accepted’ this way is not really being accepted at all because you are not really being who you are with these people. Sure you may not live in a machine but you can make the best of what you have and be proud of it without being judged.
