Phase 3a - Child Health and Womens Health
Rotherham takes student doctors for 2 of the 6 modules that form part of Phase 3a - 4 students in Child Health (Paediatrics) and 4 students in Womens Health (Obstetrics and Gynaecology).
Child Health

The Child Health rotation lasts for 7 weeks. There is a lot to do during this time with a wide variety of learning opportunities. Each student is provided with an 'Information Pack' to help make you aware of what to expect when you start. Go through this information carefully at the beginning of your attachment.

The Paediatric unit consists of 8 consultants with associated junior staff. Dr Trend is the Clinical Lead for undergraduates.

There are 3 children's wards on level A, SCBU and postnatal ward (B10) are on level B and Children's OPD on level C.

The main emphasis on your attachment should be history taking and clinical examination. Try to take histories and examine as many children as possible - you will be asked to present these cases on a regular basis. You will also be expected to be resident on-call during some of your attachment.

As well as a lot of clinical experience through taking histories and examinations you will also have a wide range of teaching sessions  included in your timetable and access to further teaching opportunities / resources as required.

The 7 weeks will start off with a week of 'orientation' which will include starting to understand paediatric history and examination through a series of demonstrations. Following that students will be divided up to spend a week or more in a specific area - neonatal, general, community, clinics. The final 7th week is an opportunity to work within various areas prior to assessment.

There is time within the rotation for the six themed ILAs and the SSC work.

Womens Health

The Womens Health rotation lasts for 7 weeks. Like Child Health there is a lot to do!

Week one is spent in Sheffield for a series of core lectures. The next six weeks at Rotherham  are coordinated by Mr Olawo.

The first week in Rotherham is an introductory clinical week  which includes Induction, revision of some clinical skills from Phase 2, theatre code, clinics and teaching sessions. Following that students then rotate for a week at a time - clinic, theatre, ward and labour ward - with the final week being an opportunity to go back to various areas as required.

As well as the experience within Womens Health, students will also spend a full day with the Breast Team (Clinical Lead is Miss Donlon) and have teaching and attend clinics in Genito-Urinary Medicine (Clinical Lead is Dr Bowman).

There is time within the rotation for the ILA and SSC work.
